Bronx Imam Finds Abandoned Baby Girl
A shocking incident unfolded in the Bronx when an imam discovered a newborn baby girl abandoned in a bag on his doorstep. Security camera footage shows a person leaving the green tote bag containing the infant, wrapped in blankets, on the sidewalk. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Sunday in the Longwood section.
Neighbors Hear Baby's Cries
The baby's cries alerted neighbors, including Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, who discovered her and immediately called 911. Jallow, an imam at a nearby mosque, described finding the baby cold but alive, "blinking their eyes and shaking their fingers."
"It's crazy. How do you leave a baby like this in the street?" said one neighbor, Fatou Sair.
Safe Haven Laws and Potential Charges
While New York has safe haven laws allowing newborns to be left at designated locations without penalty, the person in the video could face charges of abandonment and child endangerment. The baby is now at Jacobi Medical Center and is reportedly doing well.
Jallow expressed hope for the baby's well-being and forgiveness for the mother.
The Mystery Remains
The NYPD is investigating, but currently hasn't identified the person in the video or their relationship to the baby. The mystery surrounding the abandonment adds to the shock and sadness of the situation. The case highlights the importance of understanding the resources available for parents facing difficult circumstances and the crucial role of community in protecting vulnerable infants.
