**A 20-year-old man was arrested after breaking into Gracie Mansion**, the official residence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, on New Year's Day. 

The incident occurred in the early morning hours, with the suspect found in an upstairs bathroom shortly before 4:30 a.m.  He was apprehended by the mayor's security detail and **charged with attempted burglary**. 

Mayor Adams was not home at the time.  It is unclear if anything was stolen from the residence. The suspect, a local resident, will be arraigned in Manhattan court on Thursday. 

Gracie Mansion, a stately home located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, is typically heavily secured.

This snowy weather follows a **polar vortex**, which is bringing a blast of **extreme cold** to the region. Temperatures are expected to plummet, making this the coldest period of the season so far.
