NYC Congestion Pricing Officially Launched!
After years of planning and legal challenges, congestion pricing is now in effect in New York City! Starting today, drivers must pay a toll to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street.
How Much Will it Cost?
The toll is $9 during peak hours (5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends). Off-peak hours will cost $2.25.
Legal Battles Resolved
A last-minute lawsuit from New Jersey challenging the plan was rejected, clearing the way for implementation. While New Jersey plans to appeal, the congestion pricing plan will proceed.
MTA's Response
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber celebrated the launch, calling it a "historic" moment that will contribute to cleaner air, safer streets, less traffic, and improved public transit. Transportation experts also anticipate that congestion pricing could ultimately lower the cost of living for service professionals by allowing for quicker travel times.
