NYC Drone Scare: FAA Imposes Flight Restrictions

These restrictions, lasting until mid-January, affect dozens of areas near critical infrastructure. The move comes after weeks of unexplained drone sightings across the region, sparking concerns and speculation.

New Jersey Restrictions

The FAA cites "special security reasons" for the ban, stating that it was requested by federal security partners. Affected New Jersey locations include: Hamilton, Bridgewater, Cedar Grove, and many more. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson emphasized that the restrictions are a precautionary measure, stating there's no confirmed public safety threat.

New York Restrictions

Following suit, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced similar flight restrictions over critical infrastructure sites within the state, emphasizing a precautionary approach. The restrictions include areas near LaGuardia Airport and several boroughs of New York City.

Potential Consequences

The NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) warns that those who violate the restrictions face potential interception, detention, and penalties including civil fines, certificate suspension or revocation, and even criminal charges. In cases of an imminent security threat, the government reserves the right to use deadly force.

Ongoing Investigation

The FBI has received over 5,000 tips regarding drone sightings. A joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, FAA, and Department of Defense indicates the sightings include a mix of legitimate drones, hobbyist drones, and other aircraft, as well as misidentified objects.
