NYC Law School Sheds Light on the Enormous Impact of State Law on Your Life

Some might think civics, especially city and state law, is often overlooked in school. But New York Law School, located in Tribeca, is making a move to make it easier to understand. They've renamed their Center for New York City Law to The Center for New York City and State Law, and they're expanding their programs for both the public and law students.

The goal? To shine a light on how the city and state governments interact and shape the laws that affect us all. This includes everything from transit and housing to everyday services.

A Hub for Civic Engagement

This revamped center will be a gathering place for legal experts, policymakers, students, and everyday New Yorkers. They'll host discussions, research, public events featuring expert guests, and podcasts to delve deeper into important government matters.

Ben Max, the center's executive editor and program director, says they'll offer a variety of programming, some open to the public and some specifically for New York Law School students and faculty. They're building on 30 years of experience, with an even more diverse range of programming in the future.

State Law's Enormous Impact on NYC

Dean Anthony Crowell, who served as a counselor to former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is spearheading the changes and will act as the center's faculty director. He stresses that New York State law has a huge impact on the city and the center will be exploring this in depth.

One example? The MTA, which runs the city's subway system, is a state authority, not under the mayor's control. This is just one way state-level decisions impact the laws and administration of NYC's government and society.

Upcoming Public Events

Public events at the center will likely be held twice a month. Keep an eye out for their CityLaw Breakfast series, which will start with a discussion on the Adams administration's response to the humanitarian crisis. The guest speaker for this event will be Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Islom.

This center is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about how government decisions impact their daily lives in New York City.
