While the winds will be calmer, temperatures will only reach the 20s.  Clouds will increase throughout the afternoon, bringing snow showers from the west into the evening.  Light accumulations are possible, especially inland and on Long Island.

# AT&T Abruptly Ends 5G Home Internet in NYC

AT&T has announced it's pulling its 5G home internet service from New York City in direct response to the state's new **Affordable Broadband Act**, which went into effect on Wednesday.  This decision leaves existing customers with a 45-day grace period to find alternative providers. 

The **Affordable Broadband Act**, passed in 2021 but delayed by legal challenges, requires internet providers with over 20,000 customers to offer low-income households two affordable plans: one with 25Mbps download speeds for $15/month and another with up to 200Mbps for $20/month. 

AT&T's 5G home internet service, previously priced at $55-$60/month, did not meet these requirements. Instead of complying, the company chose to withdraw its service entirely, citing the law's **rate regulations** as economically unviable. 

This action follows the end of federal funding for the pandemic-era **Affordable Connectivity Program**, which offered similar discounts.

**AT&T's statement** highlights the perceived harmfulness of the new regulations on their investment and expansion in New York's broadband infrastructure.

This move leaves many New Yorkers scrambling for alternative internet providers, raising concerns about **digital equity** and access to affordable high-speed internet.  The company's decision also underlines the ongoing tension between **affordable internet access** and the profitability of telecom providers.

# NYPD Cops Sue The New York Times and Target for Millions in Unpaid Wages

Up to 6,000 NYPD officers are suing The New York Times, Target, and other businesses for allegedly failing to pay them for off-duty security work.  A class-action lawsuit claims millions of dollars in wages are owed to officers who participated in the NYPD's paid detail program.

## The Lawsuit's Claims

A new class action lawsuit alleges that the New York Times and Target, along with other businesses, owe NYPD officers millions of dollars in unpaid wages for security details.  The suit claims that many officers were paid months late or not at all for their work.  One sergeant, Mohamed Monasar, stated that both Target (with debts dating back to 2023) and The New York Times owe him money.  Another plaintiff, NYPD Captain Gabrielle Walls, claims several Brooklyn Target stores owe her $10,500 for 121 hours of unpaid work. The lawsuit also names the NYPD as a defendant for their alleged failure to enforce contracts between businesses and officers.

## The New York Times' Response

A New York Times spokesperson stated: "The safety and security of our people are a top priority for us. We rely on the NYPD and their police officers to augment our security program, and we appreciate their work. We’ve just received this complaint and are reviewing it."

## Impact on Officers

## Attorney's Statement

Attorney John Scola stated: "These corporations rely on police officers to provide protection and security but then refuse to compensate them for their services. In effect, these multi-billion-dollar companies are exploiting the very officers they hire, effectively stealing their labor by failing to pay them what they are owed."

# NYC Subway Crime Crackdown: New Measures Unveiled

New York City is taking a strong stance against subway crime and fare evasion with a multi-pronged approach.  Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced a $77 million plan to bolster safety and deter fare evasion, a problem costing the MTA hundreds of millions annually.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has begun installing metal spikes on turnstile guardrails in an attempt to prevent fare evasion. ## Other Safety Measures

# Bronx MTA Bus Miraculously Hangs Off Overpass

An MTA bus had a wild ride this morning in Riverdale, Bronx.  The bus crashed into a guardrail on the Henry Hudson Parkway West, leaving its front end precariously hanging over the edge of an overpass above Kappock Street near Independence Avenue.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. Thankfully, there were no passengers on board, and the driver escaped unharmed.  Initial reports suggest the driver, attempting to navigate a turn while unable to pass legally parked vehicles, lost control.  A second MTA driver, trying to assist, also became involved in the incident. 

The scene was chaotic, with debris scattered onto Kappock Street below.  Heavy-duty equipment was needed to pull the damaged bus back onto the road.

An MTA bus had a dramatic near-miss on Friday morning in the Bronx.  The BxM1 bus crashed into a guardrail on the Henry Hudson Parkway West, over Kappock Street, leaving its front end and at least one wheel dangling precariously over the edge of an overpass near Independence Avenue in Riverdale.

**Thankfully, there were no passengers on board**, and the **driver escaped without injury**.  Debris from the impact scattered onto Kappock Street below.  Authorities interviewed the driver at the scene, and emergency crews are working to secure the bus using a heavy-duty cable to pull it back to safety.

# Bronx MTA Bus Miraculously Hangs Off Overpass

An MTA bus was precariously hanging off an overpass near the Henry Hudson Parkway in the Bronx on Friday morning.  The incident occurred around 9 a.m. near Kappock Street in the Spuyten Duyvil section.

**Debris** was seen on the roadway below the overpass, a service road adjacent to the parkway. Dozens of firefighters responded to the scene.

According to witnesses, the bus driver was attempting a turn, possibly struggling to avoid a parked car, when they lost control and crashed into the guardrail.  **The driver was the only person on board and was unharmed.**

The incident caused significant disruption.  Videos from Citizen App showed the front of the bus dangling over the edge.

This incident highlights concerns about **driver safety and infrastructure conditions** in the area.  The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
