This snowy weather follows a **polar vortex**, which is bringing a blast of **extreme cold** to the region. Temperatures are expected to plummet, making this the coldest period of the season so far. This could be the East Coast's first colder-than-average January since 2022, and possibly the coldest since 2014 or 2011.
