NYC's Absolute Bagels: The End of an Era?

A beloved Upper West Side institution, Absolute Bagels, has abruptly closed its doors after 30 years in business. The closure, met with an outpouring of grief from loyal customers, followed a scathing health inspection citing a severe rat infestation.

Health Department Intervention

The New York City Department of Health issued a 67-point violation against Absolute Bagels, detailing egregious conditions including rat droppings in food preparation areas, gnawed sugar packets, and dead rodents in glue traps. The smoked salmon was also found to be contaminated with wastewater.

The Health Department stated the closure was necessary due to an imminent public health hazard.

The Owner's Decision

Owner Samek Thongkrieng reportedly decided to close the business permanently, leaving customers and long-time employees stunned and without explanation. While he cited being "tired and very old," the extent of the health violations likely contributed to the decision.
