Bronx Seeks Funding Boost for Tree Planting to Tackle Air Pollution
Air pollution, particularly its impact on the South Bronx, is a major concern. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson is urging Mayor Eric Adams to increase funding for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to significantly expand tree planting initiatives.
Addressing Health Concerns Through Greenery
Gibson's proposal aims to allocate at least 1% of the city's 2026 budget to this effort. She highlights the disproportionate rates of asthma, heart disease, and kidney disease in the Bronx, emphasizing that increased tree cover can mitigate these issues by combating the heat island effect and improving air quality. The initiative would not only plant more trees but also ensure proper maintenance.

City Hall's Response and Community Support
Christina Taylor of the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance points out that this 1% increase would roughly double current funding for parks and recreation, encompassing tree planting, park maintenance, and essential services. City Hall responded with a statement emphasizing its commitment to park improvements, highlighting recent budget increases and staffing expansions. However, community organizations hope that the borough's needs and the health of its residents will be central to budget decisions.
Gibson emphasizes the collective benefits of increased tree cover for all Bronx residents, affecting their health, quality of life, and the overall well-being of the community.
