Brooklyn Subway Shooting: Cops Fire on Armed Fare-Beater, Injuring Bystanders and Officer
Four people were injured in a shooting at a Brooklyn subway station on Sunday afternoon, including two bystanders and an NYPD officer. The incident began when two officers confronted a man who had allegedly skipped the turnstile and entered the station through an open gate.
The officers followed the man up to the elevated L train platform, where they ordered him to turn around. During a verbal altercation, the officers "became aware of a knife" and the man made a verbal threat. When a northbound L train pulled into the station, the man jumped inside, but then exited while the train was still at the station and charged one of the officers with a knife.
Both officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect several times. Unfortunately, they also struck two bystanders and one of the officers. A female bystander was grazed and a male bystander was struck in the head. The injured officer was hit underneath his armpit, just missing his bulletproof vest.
Mayor Eric Adams described the suspect as a "career criminal" with over 20 arrests.
The shooting is under investigation by the NYPD.
