Cuomo's NYC Mayoral Campaign Suffers Major Setback

Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, faced a significant blow to his mayoral campaign after being denied nearly $3 million in public matching funds. A paperwork error by his campaign led to the Campaign Finance Board's decision, significantly impacting his fundraising efforts.

The campaign sent a last-minute email to supporters urging them to complete forms to secure the matching funds, but it was too late. The board denied Cuomo's request for roughly $2.7 million in matching funds based on the $332,530 raised.

The City's Matching Funds Program

New York City offers an 8-to-1 matching funds program for donations up to $2,150 from city residents. This program aims to level the playing field for less wealthy candidates.

Cuomo's Campaign's Troubles

This setback follows other administrative stumbles by Cuomo's campaign. These include the release of a typo-ridden housing plan and misspellings of prominent union leaders' names in endorsement announcements. Read more about the housing plan blunder

Mamdani's Fundraising Lead

In contrast, Zohran Mamdani, a state Assemblyman, secured the most public dollars, raising over $8 million and reaching the fundraising cap. This allows Mamdani to focus on spending rather than fundraising. Current polls indicate Cuomo is leading the Democratic mayoral primary, but Mamdani maintains a strong second place position. Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent after being denied matching funds and facing corruption charges.

Other Candidates' Funding

The board also approved matching funds for other candidates, including Brad Lander, Zellnor Myrie, Scott Stringer, and Jim Walden. Lander has raised nearly $6 million, Stringer $4.5 million, Myrie $3.5 million, and Walden $2.8 million. Even Anthony Weiner received matching funds for his city council bid.
