Free Skin Cancer Screenings in NYC

Summer might be over, but protecting your skin from the sun is a year-round priority. That's why the Skin Cancer Foundation is offering free skin cancer screenings to New Yorkers next week.

Starting Thursday, September 26, New Yorkers with or without health insurance can get a full-body checkup from volunteer dermatologists. The Foundation will have "Destination Healthy Skin" RVs in Manhattan and Brooklyn to offer screenings, answer questions about sun protection, and demonstrate proper SPF application.

Early detection of skin cancer is crucial for minimal treatment and effective cure. This is the most common type of cancer in the U.S., according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, which has been raising awareness since 1979.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently shared her experience with basal cell carcinoma, a highly curable type of skin cancer, after being diagnosed during a routine checkup. She underwent a quick operation to have it removed.

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer develops in the epidermis, the top layer of your skin. The most common types are:

• Squamous cell carcinoma
• Basal cell carcinoma
• Melanoma, the deadliest type, which can spread and is harder to treat.

Symptoms of Skin Cancer

The first sign of skin cancer is often a change in the skin. However, not all skin cancers look the same. The National Cancer Institute recommends checking your skin regularly.
