Ivy League Grad Charged with Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old suspect with an Ivy League background, is expected to be extradited to New York City to face charges in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione appeared in a Pennsylvania court on December 19th, where he's expected to waive extradition.

The Charges

Mangione faces an 11-count indictment from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, including first-degree murder, with the possibility of federal charges and a potential death penalty. The Manhattan DA's office stated that the killing, which occurred on a Manhattan sidewalk, was "intended to evoke terror." He's also charged with possessing an untraceable ghost gun with a homemade silencer.

The Case

Thompson was shot on December 4th outside a Hilton hotel while heading to an investor's conference. Prosecutors allege Mangione waited for nearly an hour before carrying out the attack. Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, stated that the piling on of charges raises constitutional concerns.
