South Brooklyn Marine Terminal: Powering NYC's Green Future
Construction is rapidly progressing on the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, a significant 73-acre project in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This ambitious undertaking will serve as a crucial hub for the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm, the first of its kind to directly connect to the New York City power grid.
A Collaborative Effort
Developed by NYCEDC and SSBMT (a joint venture of Red Hook Terminals and Industry City), the $861 million project will handle turbine components and house a substation transferring 810 megawatts to the Gowanus substation. This will power an estimated 500,000 homes across NYC.
Key Features and Upgrades
The project includes:
- Dredging and berth upgrades
- Enhanced bulkheads, lighting, security, and safety systems
- Installation of two heavy-lift crane pads
- Construction of an 85,000-square-foot operations building with warehouse, office, and parking facilities, equipped with photovoltaic panels and electric vehicle charging stations.
Project Timeline and Impact
With a groundbreaking ceremony last May, attended by Mayor Adams and other dignitaries, the project is generating over 1,000 union jobs. The terminal's anticipated completion is summer 2026.
The closest subway access is the D, N, R, and W trains at the 36th Street station.
Empire Wind 1: A Clean Energy Milestone
A joint venture between Equinor and bp, Empire Wind 1 represents a pivotal step towards New York City's commitment to renewable energy. The project's long-term operations and maintenance base, including a 24/7 control room, will be located at the terminal.
