MTA Unveils Ambitious $65B Plan to Modernize NYC Subway System

The MTA has announced a massive $68.4 billion capital plan for the next five years, aiming to address the city's aging and struggling subway system. This ambitious plan comes amidst financial uncertainty following the pause of congestion pricing, leaving the agency with a $16 billion gap to fill.

The plan prioritizes crucial improvements, including:

• New Subway Cars: 1,500 new subway cars will be added to the fleet, replacing aging trains and increasing capacity.
• Signal Modernization: $5.4 billion will be allocated to upgrading subway signals on key lines, including the Broadway N, Q, R, W, Liberty and Rockaway A, S, and Nassau J, Z lines. This will improve reliability and reduce delays.
• Fare Gates Improvements: Over $1 billion will go towards installing new fare gates at 150 subway stations, aimed at reducing fare evasion and generating additional revenue.
• Accessibility Upgrades: The plan includes funding for making at least 60 more stations ADA-accessible and replacing 45 subway station elevators, improving accessibility for riders with disabilities.
• Station Renovations: More than 150 stations will undergo priority repairs, customer communication upgrades, and enhanced security cameras. 10 stations will be fully renovated and platform fencing will be installed at 100 stations, improving safety and rider experience.
• Electric Buses: By 2029, 20% of the MTA's buses will be electric, reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the agency's goal of an 85% reduction in agency-wide emissions by 2040.

The MTA emphasizes that this plan represents the largest investment in the agency's history, focusing on bringing the system to a state of good repair.
