Tragedy Strikes: NYC Art Dealer and Husband Perish in Dominican Republic Nightclub Collapse
A devastating roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, claimed the lives of at least 221 people, including New York City art dealer Elvira Malkic and her husband, Hakim Boubazine. The incident occurred during a performance by popular merengue singer Rubby Perez.
Elvira Malkic, a mother of three, was the co-owner of the Elity Art gallery in Manhattan. Hakim Boubazine previously served as the COO of Altice USA.
The couple was at the nightclub celebrating a birthday. A gallery employee shared that Malkic's co-owner, Tiffany Kaljić, learned of the tragedy through news reports and immediately flew to the Dominican Republic.
An artist who was a client of Malkic's expressed their devastation on social media, highlighting Malkic's kindness and support of emerging artists. Altice USA also released a statement expressing condolences to the Boubazine family.
The 53-hour search and rescue operation resulted in 189 survivors. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway.
