NYC Blizzard Warning: Massive Lake-Effect Snowstorm Slams New York!
Parts of New York state were hammered by a powerful lake-effect snowstorm on Friday, creating dangerous white-out conditions just days before Christmas. The storm, impacting areas near the Great Lakes, caused hazardous driving conditions during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Hazardous Conditions
The National Weather Service (NWS) reported heavy lake-effect snow bands and showers, warning of difficult travel through next week. Areas like Watertown are bracing for several feet of snow accumulation.
Areas around Buffalo, north of Syracuse, and Watertown experienced the brunt of the storm. The NWS described travel conditions as "extremely poor," with snowfall rates reaching three inches per hour in some areas.
Lake-Effect Snow Explained
Lake-effect snow happens when cold, dry air passes over warmer lake water, picking up moisture. As this air moves over land, it cools, causing the moisture to condense and fall as snow.
Official Response
New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency and implemented a travel ban on empty and tandem commercial vehicles across major highways to prevent accidents and traffic gridlock. The ban covers a significant portion of the state's highway system, extending from Pennsylvania to Interstate 390, I-90 to Exit 53, and Route 219.
