NYC Boating Tragedy: Four Dead, One Missing After Boat Capsizes
A tragic boating accident off the coast of New York City has left four people dead and one presumed dead. A 30-foot vessel carrying six people sank 5 miles southeast of Breezy Point, Queens, after taking on water during a fishing trip.
The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search after failing to locate 52-year-old Vernon Glasford of the Bronx. The Coast Guard and NYPD recovered the other five individuals; four were unresponsive, and two were hospitalized in critical and stable condition. The cold water temperature of approximately 38 degrees Fahrenheit likely exacerbated the situation.
The Coast Guard's search covered approximately 842 square miles over 30 hours, employing helicopters, planes, ships, and small boats. The identities of the other victims have not yet been released, but the family of one victim, Cecilio Javier Adames, shared their grief and described the events leading to the tragedy. Adames' wife stated he'd called her about strong winds before the accident, while his daughter recounted a harrowing account from a friend witnessing the capsizing. Adames had survived a previous boating accident in 2009.
The Coast Guard expressed its deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic incident. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
