NYC Bridges Under Scrutiny Following Bridge Collapse
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended vulnerability assessments for 68 bridges across the US, including several iconic NYC bridges, following the catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The NTSB Chair, Jennifer Homendy, stated that a prior vulnerability assessment could have prevented the deadly collapse, which killed six construction workers.
Key NYC Bridges Affected:
The list includes the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, Verrazano-Narrows, and George Washington Bridges, as well as others in New York and New Jersey. The NTSB emphasizes that this recommendation doesn't imply imminent collapse, but rather urges a review of risk levels against AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) guidelines. Bridge owners are advised to develop comprehensive risk reduction plans if necessary.
Responses from Authorities:
The MTA Bridges and Tunnels President, Catherine Sheridan, assures that their bridges undergo routine inspections and meet AASHTO standards. The Port Authority of NY and NJ also released a statement addressing the specific risks to their bridges.
The NYC DOT is reviewing the NTSB's request, noting that the size of vessels involved in the Baltimore incident cannot navigate the East River where the affected NYC bridges are located.
The NTSB's final report on the Key Bridge collapse is expected this fall. The incident highlights the critical need for regular bridge safety assessments and proactive risk management.
