  • Several NYC bridges, including the Verrazzano-Narrows and George Washington bridges, are included in the review.

  • The review focuses on the risk of collapse from vessel collisions.

  • The NTSB recommends vulnerability assessments but does not indicate imminent collapse.

  • Bridge owners are urged to implement comprehensive risk reduction plans if necessary.

NYC Bridges Under NTSB's Collapse Risk Review

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended safety evaluations for 68 bridges across 19 states, including several in New York City. This follows the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Key NYC Bridges Affected:

  • Staten Island: Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing
  • Manhattan: Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge

The NTSB's report highlights that the collapsed Baltimore bridge was significantly above the acceptable risk threshold for critical bridges. The investigation prompted a review of other bridges, focusing on the risk of collapse from vessel collisions.

The NTSB is recommending vulnerability assessments to determine the risk of collapse. This does not imply imminent collapse but rather a proactive measure to evaluate safety.

Other Affected Areas: The review also includes bridges in New Jersey and the Hudson Valley, as well as those connecting New York to Canada. A broader list includes states such as Delaware, New Hampshire, Ohio, Florida, and others.

The NTSB urges bridge owners to calculate collapse risk using the AASHTO Method II and develop risk reduction plans if necessary.
