NYC Christmas Tree Disposal: A Green Guide for 2025
The holidays are over, and it's time to say goodbye to your Christmas tree! But don't just toss it in the trash. New York City makes it easy to recycle or compost your tree, helping keep our city green.
Curbside Composting:
Thanks to NYC's expanded curbside composting program, you can now easily dispose of your tree along with food scraps and yard waste on your regular collection day. Just remember to remove all decorations and stands before placing it out. No plastic bags, please!
Mulchfest:
Prefer a hands-on approach? NYC Parks' annual Mulchfest (December 26th, 2024 - January 12th, 2025) lets you drop off your tree to be turned into wood chips for nourishing city trees. Find a location near you on the NYC Parks website.
In 2023, over 46,000 trees were recycled through Mulchfest – let's make 2025 even better!
Artificial Tree Disposal:
For artificial trees, remove the metal base and trunk and place them in your metal recycling bin.
Recycle Responsibly, Keep NYC Green!
By following these simple steps, you can ensure your Christmas tree gets a second life, contributing to a more sustainable New York City.
