NYC Crime Rates in 2024: A Mixed Bag
New York City crime dominated headlines in 2024, with numerous incidents of shootings and stabbings. But the overall picture is complex, showing both decreases and increases in specific crime categories.
Overall Crime Statistics
According to NYPD statistics, overall crime in NYC decreased by 3% in 2024 compared to 2023. This positive trend was reflected in a 3.8% drop in murders (375 in 2024 vs. 390 in 2023), as well as decreases in robberies and burglaries.
However, not all crime categories saw a decrease. The city experienced an 18.7% increase in rapes and a 4.9% increase in felony assaults. Critically, felony assaults on the subway and mass transit saw a stark 65% increase from 2019 to 2024 (374 in 2019 to 579 in 2024), according to the MTA. This has left many New Yorkers feeling unsafe on public transport.
