What is a REAL ID?
If your New York State license or ID doesn't have a star or flag, it's not REAL ID-compliant. A REAL ID is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings starting May 7, 2025, unless you have a valid passport.
What Documents Do You Need?
To obtain a REAL ID, you'll need to visit a DMV office in person and bring documents proving U.S. citizenship, New York residency, and your Social Security number. The DMV's online document guide provides a personalized checklist. Expired documents won't be accepted.
Fees
There's no extra fee for a standard REAL ID, but normal transaction fees apply. An Enhanced ID costs an additional $30.
Tips for a Smooth Process
- Bring appropriate proof of residency.
- Bring proof of your full legal name.
- Consider early renewal and conversion to a Real or Enhanced ID.
