Two Former NYC Fire Chiefs Arrested in Bribery Scandal
Two former New York City Fire Department chiefs, Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco, were arrested on Monday on charges of soliciting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to provide preferential treatment within the department's fire prevention bureau.
The charges allege that the chiefs accepted bribes from at least 2021 to 2023. Their lawyers have yet to respond to requests for comment.
The arrests come amidst a widening corruption investigation in New York City's government. This follows the abrupt resignation of Mayor Eric Adams' top legal advisor and the resignation of the NYPD commissioner after federal investigators seized his phone.
The indictment accuses the former chiefs of conspiracy to solicit a bribe, solicitation and receipt of a bribe, honest services wire fraud, and making false statements in connection with the scheme to solicit and accept bribes in exchange for preferential treatment.
The Fire Department's Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for regulating fire safety systems throughout the city and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations.
