A Frequent Traveler's First Trip to NYC: Ups and Downs
I travel extensively, but New York City remained elusive until this past winter. My four-day trip had its highs and lows, exceeding expectations in some areas and falling short in others.
The Good:
Hop-on, Hop-off Bus Tour
A hop-on, hop-off bus provided a fantastic introduction to the city. The numerous stops allowed for ample exploration of Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Bryant Park, offering stunning skyline views.
Bryant Park's Holiday Market
Bryant Park's holiday market was a delightful surprise, reminiscent of European Christmas markets. The diverse stalls and delicious food, including a memorable raclette sandwich, created a festive atmosphere.
The Incredible Food Scene
New York City's food lived up to the hype! From bagels and dim sum to Italian and Indian fusion, every culinary experience was exceptional. A Hell's Kitchen food tour, featuring Georgian cheese boat and chicken tikka masala tacos, was a particular highlight.
Rockefeller Center's Panoramic Views
Rockefeller Center offered a truly unforgettable experience. From observing the "Today" show filming to exploring FAO Schwarz, the 360-degree city views from the top were breathtaking.
The Bad:
The Disappointment of Times Square
Times Square proved underwhelming. The sheer volume of billboards, shops, and street performers created an overwhelming and less-than-impressive experience.
Navigating the City
The city's public transportation system, while extensive, felt daunting. Rideshares and taxis, while expensive and often slow due to traffic, became the primary mode of transport, limiting exploration to Midtown Manhattan.
