Ghostbusters on Patrol: NYC Cracks Down on Illegal Cars

New York City is launching a new initiative to tackle the problem of 'ghost cars' - vehicles with fake, stolen, or altered license plates that are difficult to trace. The Ghost Car Task Force, a collaboration between the Department of Sanitation and the NYPD, will be actively removing these illegal vehicles from city streets.

Mayor Eric Adams announced the task force on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of cracking down on this issue: "…we are sending an important message to everyone who drives on the streets of our city: fake plates are a real crime and if you leave a car on city streets with forged, stolen, or altered plates, it won’t be there when you get back."

The task force, consisting of 15 uniformed officers, has already made significant progress. In its first week alone, they removed nearly 300 ghost cars from the five boroughs. These seized vehicles are held at NYPD lots where they will be processed, either claimed, auctioned, or destroyed following investigations.

Why Target Ghost Cars?

Ghost cars pose a serious threat to public safety. Their untraceable nature makes them ideal for criminal activities, as they often appear at crime scenes. This initiative aims to increase accountability and deter potential criminals from using these vehicles.

This new city-led task force adds to existing statewide initiatives targeting ghost vehicles. These combined efforts have already resulted in the removal of almost 2,200 ghost cars from NYC streets. The city is committed to making streets safer and more secure by tackling this issue head-on.
