NYC Raid Nets 7 Migrant Gang Members

Federal agents recently conducted a raid in the Bronx, arresting seven alleged members of the violent Venezuelan migrant gang, Tren de Aragua. The raid, which took place on December 5th, was a significant victory in the ongoing fight against the gang's growing presence in New York City.

The operation was initiated after authorities tracked a GPS ankle monitor worn by one of the suspects, Jarwin Valero-Calderon, to a Bronx apartment. The source questioned the effectiveness of ankle monitors if not properly monitored.

The Tren de Aragua's NYC Foothold

The Tren de Aragua has been gaining traction in NYC, recruiting members from tax-funded migrant shelters, and engaging in various criminal activities including theft, robbery, drug trafficking, gun running and sex trafficking. A former Denver ICE chief commented on the gang's strategic movement into sanctuary cities to establish themselves and expand their operations.

Several of the arrested individuals had prior arrests in different states and were wanted on multiple warrants. Their cases highlight the challenges in tracking and apprehending individuals after they enter the country.

A Juvenile Offshoot: Diablos de la 42

Authorities also mentioned the concerning rise of a juvenile offshoot of the Tren de Aragua, the “Diablos de la 42,” targeting tourists in areas such as Times Square, exploiting lax criminal justice and juvenile detention systems in NYC.
