A Brooklyn teen's second chance at life
18-year-old Elijah John, a leukemia survivor, had an emotional reunion with the man who saved his life: Nicholas Miranda-Newberry. The two met for the first time at Manhattan's Pier 57, three years after Miranda-Newberry donated his bone marrow to John.
John was diagnosed with leukemia in 2020 at just 14 years old. The diagnosis came after a toothache that wouldn't heal. He endured several surgeries and months of chemotherapy, losing his hair and teeth in the process. His family feared the worst, but a match was found in Miranda-Newberry, giving John a 'second chance at life'.
Miranda-Newberry, a world traveler from Chicago, first signed up to be a bone marrow donor at age 18 after seeing an ad on social media for DKMS. He was contacted four years later and informed he was a match for John.
The reunion was filled with tears and joy. John presented Miranda-Newberry with a plaque expressing his gratitude. The family now celebrates the anniversary of the bone marrow transplant as John's 'new birth'.
The meeting highlights the importance of bone marrow donation. 70% of people with blood cancers rely on donors outside their families. You can register to join the donor pool and request a swab kit online through DKMS at dkms.org.
