A Rare Sight

While whale sightings in NYC aren't unheard of, this is the first recorded instance in the East River since 2022. Experts believe the whale, likely a juvenile, ventured into the busy channel in search of food, specifically Atlantic menhaden. The sighting is notable because it's about 40 miles from its typical feeding grounds near Rockaway Beach.

Reactions and Concerns

News of the whale sighting quickly spread, with many eager New Yorkers rushing to the waterfront for a glimpse. One NYU student, Chris St. Lawrence, even went to Governors Island to try and spot the majestic creature. However, young Williamsburg resident Jocelynn Loebl expressed concerns about the whale's safety in the heavily trafficked waterway.

The Whale's Departure

Though initially spotted near the Brooklyn Bridge, the humpback has since left the East River. The US Coast Guard's boating safety warning has been lifted. NYC Ferry, known for its frequent crossings, maintained safe operations during the event.

Gotham Whale's Perspective

Gotham Whale's director of research, Danielle Brown, shared insights on why the whale might have chosen the East River. She explained that the presence of Atlantic menhaden often draws whales to the area, regardless of the boat traffic.

Will the Whale Return?

Juvenile whales sometimes spend several days feeding in NYC waters before moving on to deeper waters. So there is still hope for more sightings!
