NYCFC's Opening Day Thriller Ends in a 2-2 Draw
New York City FC were agonizingly close to their first opening day win since 2018, only to concede a last-minute equalizer against Inter Miami. Despite playing much of the second half with a one-goal lead, a 10-man Inter Miami side snatched a dramatic draw.
A Patchwork Lineup and Promising Debuts
Coach Pascal Jansen fielded a lineup featuring several new faces. Strahinja Tanasijević started in place of the injured Thiago Martins, while Maxi Moralez played 78 minutes. The match also marked the MLS debuts of 17-year-old Jonny Shore and MLS SuperDraft pick Nico Cavallo.
A Rollercoaster of Goals
Mitja Ilenič scored NYCFC's first goal of the season, capitalizing on a well-executed set piece from Moralez. Alonso Martínez then doubled the lead after pouncing on a giveaway. However, Inter Miami, despite being a man down, proved relentless and Telco Segovia's unmarked goal in stoppage time secured a 2-2 draw.
