NYC Christmas Tree Disposal: Now Year-Round!
New Yorkers can now say goodbye to their Christmas trees anytime they want, thanks to the city's Department of Sanitation (DSNY). The DSNY has expanded its curbside composting program to include year-round Christmas tree collection!
How to Dispose of Your Tree:
- Real Trees: Simply place your 'naked' tree (free of decorations, ornaments, and stands) out on your regular curbside composting day. Don't wrap it in plastic!
- Artificial Trees: Remove any metal parts and recycle them with your other metal.
This initiative is part of the city's larger effort to reduce waste and turn organic materials into compost or renewable energy. The DSNY's statement puts it best: "Are you a family that takes the tree down on Christmas? Do you hold out for all twelve days? Rather wait until May? It’s all ok!"
