# NYPD Officer Shot in Queens

On Tuesday evening, a New York City Police officer and a bystander were shot in Queens.  The suspect was fatally shot by police. Thankfully, **both the officer and the bystander are expected to make a full recovery**, with the officer's release from the hospital anticipated for Wednesday.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by NYPD officers in the line of duty.  While details remain under investigation, the swift action of law enforcement prevented further harm.

# NYC Rent Prices are Dropping!

While rent in NYC has skyrocketed since the pandemic, reaching a median of $3,676 for a one-bedroom apartment, there's some good news!  According to StreetEasy, five neighborhoods are experiencing rent decreases.

## 5 NYC Neighborhoods with Falling Rents:

These areas are seeing a surprising dip in asking prices:

1. **Prospect Lefferts Gardens (Brooklyn):**  A 5% year-over-year decrease!
2. **Bay Ridge (Brooklyn):**  A 4.2% year-over-year decrease.
3. **Midtown Manhattan:**  Significant decrease (exact percentage not specified)
4. **Upper East Side:**  Significant decrease (exact percentage not specified)
5. **Hamilton Heights:** A 1.8% drop compared to last year.

This downturn is likely due to high prices dampening demand, particularly in Brooklyn and Manhattan.  These boroughs have been the most saturated rental markets in recent years.

## Where Rents are STILL Rising:

In contrast, Queens has seen the biggest rent increases, with neighborhoods like Forest Hills, Jamaica, Astoria, Long Island City, and Woodside being particularly in-demand.

Other areas with the fastest rent growth include the West Village, Forest Hills, Soho, Flatiron, and Dumbo.

## Best Time to Find a Deal?

StreetEasy suggests that colder months typically see less competition among renters, potentially making it a great time to score a deal, especially in those five neighborhoods with falling rents.

Millions are gearing up for Thanksgiving travel, but a powerful winter storm is brewing, threatening to disrupt holiday plans across New York and New Jersey.  The storm, packing snow, heavy rain, and strong winds, is expected to hit just as the busiest travel period begins.

The FOX Forecast Center predicts significant snowfall in upstate New York, with some areas potentially seeing 5-8 inches or more.  Several winter weather alerts have already been issued.

## NYC Winter Snow Forecast

FOX 5 NY's Nick Gregory predicts around 20 inches of snow for NYC this winter—below the typical 28-inch average. The lower Hudson Valley might see slightly more. Historically, the first measurable snowfall in NYC occurs around December 13th.

# NYC-Toronto High-Speed Rail: A Bold New Plan?

**Senator Jeremy Cooney**, chair of New York State's Transportation Committee, is pushing for a high-speed rail line connecting **New York City** and **Toronto**.  He argues this is a financially viable and environmentally sound project, especially considering Toronto's growing economic importance.

Cooney believes that past studies support the feasibility of high-speed rail and that current private sector interest in such projects, as seen with **Brightline** in Florida, can lessen the financial burden on taxpayers.

He points to the success of Brightline and other international examples to demonstrate the growing public demand for faster, more efficient travel. Currently, the train journey between NYC and Toronto takes 12 hours, while a flight takes under two hours.  A high-speed rail line would significantly reduce travel time.

Interestingly, while high-speed rail components are being manufactured in Upstate New York for projects like the Brightline West line connecting Las Vegas and Southern California, trains in Upstate NY are currently capped at 90 mph due to federal regulations. Cooney advocates for implementing this technology within New York state.  He also highlights the potential for investment from the incoming Trump administration given Trump's New York connections.

The proposal hinges on both state funding and private investment to make this ambitious project a reality. 

The chair of New York State's Transportation Committee spoke to Newsweek about how he believes New York would benefit from international high speed rail.

New York City's construction market is hotter than ever!  A recent report shows a significant surge in new residential and hotel unit filings during the third quarter of 2024.
