Summary:
PATH train fares increased for the first time since 2014.
The hike is attributed to inflation, capital improvements, and COVID-19 losses.
A single ride now costs $3.00, a 10-trip card is $28.50, and a 30-day pass is $120.75.
Seniors and disabled passengers are now eligible for discounted fares.
NYC subway fares are also set to increase this summer.
PATH Fares Increase After Congestion Pricing
Starting Sunday, PATH train fares increased for the first time since 2014. This hike follows the implementation of New York City's congestion pricing and other recent toll increases.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey attributes the fare increase to inflation, the need for capital improvements, and losses incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. This means a single ride now costs $3.00 (a 25-cent increase), a 10-trip card is $28.50 ($2.50 more), and a 30-day pass jumps to $120.75 (a $10.50 increase). However, there's good news for seniors and disabled passengers, who are now eligible for discounted fares.
Public Reaction
Reactions to the fare increase have been mixed. While some riders understand the need for upgrades, others express concerns about transparency and value for money.
"The fares need to go up in some way because in order to get better service we have to do something like that," said one rider.
"[It's] always great to have improvements, but I don't see that. They need to manage that, be more transparent," added another.
This PATH fare hike comes ahead of a planned increase in New York City subway fares this summer.
