Queens Subway Hammer Attack: Suspect Convicted
William Blount, a 60-year-old man, has been found guilty of first-degree assault, robbery, and other charges for a brutal 2022 attack on a 57-year-old woman in a Queens subway station. The attack, which left the victim, Nina Rothschild, with multiple skull fractures, was caught on surveillance video.
The Attack
Rothschild, a researcher with NYC's health department, was descending the stairs when Blount, using a cane, approached her from behind and viciously attacked her with a hammer. He then kicked her down the stairs and stole her purse.
"I kept yelling stop, stop, stop, which of course was completely and utterly useless,” Rothschild recounted in an exclusive interview.
Rothschild underwent a bilateral craniectomy to repair her skull with titanium mesh. Blount was arrested three days after the attack, and a hammer, cane, and Rothschild's belongings were recovered.
Blount's Criminal History
Blount has a significant criminal record, including kidnappings, robberies, and drug crimes dating back to the 1980s. He previously attempted to escape from prison, resulting in broken ankles. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison at sentencing, scheduled for May 7th.

The conviction brings some measure of justice for Rothschild, but underscores the need for continued efforts to improve safety and security for all commuters.
