Sensory Haven in Times Square for New Year's Eve
For the first time ever, a Sensory Activation Vehicle (SAV) will be stationed in Times Square during the New Year's Eve ball drop. This oasis of calm, provided by the Times Square Alliance and KultureCity, offers a refuge for neurodivergent individuals who might find the usual excitement overwhelming.
The 20ft x 8ft van features dimmed lighting, bubbled walls to muffle noise, and calming items like bean bags and activity panels. Sensory bags with noise-canceling headphones, fidget spinners, and more will also be available. Expert volunteers will be on hand to assist.
This initiative aims to make the New Year's Eve celebration accessible to those with autism, dementia, PTSD, and other sensory sensitivities. The SAV will be located within the Inclusive Viewing Area, which already provides ADA-compliant services.
The Times Square Alliance hopes to make the SAV an annual feature, funded through fundraising. Due to limited space, those interested should contact the Alliance in advance.
This initiative was inspired by the Belasco Theatre's provision of a sensory room during a Broadway play about autistic young adults. It reflects a growing commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in major events.
