NYC Film Critics Circle Awards 2024: The Brutalist Wins Big!

The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) announced its 2024 award winners, and the results are surprising! Brady Corbet's epic three-hour film, The Brutalist, took home the prestigious Best Film award. The movie, which garnered a 13-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, follows the story of László Tóth, a Hungarian refugee architect played by Adrien Brody, who won Best Actor for his performance.

Other notable winners include:

  • Best Director: RaMell Ross for Nickel Boys
  • Best Actress: Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Hard Truths
  • Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain
  • Best Supporting Actress: Carol Kane for Between Two Temples

The Brutalist, acquired by A24, boasts an impressive cast including Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, and Alessandro Nivola, and will be released in 70MM on December 20th. Nickel Boys, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, hits theaters December 13th.

The NYFCC, celebrating its 90th anniversary, is known for its influence on the Oscars race. While not always perfectly aligned with the Academy Awards, NYFCC winners often become Oscar nominees themselves.

This year's NYFCC awards also recognized excellence in other categories such as Best Animated Feature (Flow), Best International Film (All We Imagine As Light), and Best Documentary (No Other Land).
