Anne Frank's Secret Annex Recreated in NYC

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a full-scale replica of Anne Frank's hiding place opened at the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan. This is the first time the annex has been completely recreated outside of Amsterdam.

Immersive Experience

Unlike the empty original in Amsterdam, the NYC replica shows the five rooms furnished as they were during the Frank family's two years in hiding. Visitors can see the writing desk where Anne penned her diary, along with other personal belongings and furniture. Ronald Leopold, director of the Anne Frank House, emphasizes the exhibit's importance for education and fostering empathy.

More Than Just a Replica

The exhibit includes over 100 photos and artifacts, many never before seen publicly. This includes Anne Frank's first photo album, handwritten poetry, a replica of her diary, various translated editions of her diary, and even the Oscar won by Shelley Winters for the 1959 film adaptation. The installation chronologically traces the Frank family's life, from their time in Germany to their escape to Amsterdam, their life in hiding, and their eventual capture.
