The first case of West Nile Virus in New York this year has been confirmed at a popular beach and campground on Fire Island National Seashore, according to officials. The virus was found in a mosquito sample collected from a trap near Watch Hill, a popular camping spot on the island.

The virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, and is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who contract West Nile Virus experience no symptoms. However, for those who do, symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.

The National Park Service (NPS) and Suffolk County Department of Health Services are continuing weekly mosquito surveillance to monitor the severity and extent of the virus. Increased surveillance will also be conducted at Watch Hill. Control methods, such as larviciding, spraying, or area closures, may occur if any threats to human health are identified.

Important precautions for visitors to Fire Island National Seashore:

  • Avoid areas with high volumes of mosquitoes.
  • Wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, socks, and long pants.
  • Use insect repellent containing at least 30% DEET.
