Cornell Human Ecology Launches NYC Internship Focused on Urban Studies

Cornell University's Human Ecology department has launched a new summer internship program in New York City, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with urban studies, community engagement, and professional development.

This pilot program placed three students at the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem, a long-time partner with the Cornell Action Research Collaborative. The interns focused on youth development and worked on initiatives like the Youth Engagement and Action for Health (YEAH!) Food Justice Program. This program empowers high school students to learn about nutrition, conduct ethnographic food environment observations, and present solutions to improve the city's food access.

Erini Williams '26, a global and public health sciences major, commented on the program's impact: "I learned so much about food justice. As someone passionate about food equity, it was interesting to see how New York City and my home city experience food differently."

Beyond practical experience, the internship program is developing an urban studies course. This course will equip future interns with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive at partner sites, fostering deeper understanding of the city's unique history and challenges.

This program exemplifies Cornell's commitment to preparing students for real-world challenges and providing them with valuable experience in urban environments.
