Costco in the City vs. the Suburbs: A Shopper's Tale

As a New Yorker, I always wondered how Costco, a warehouse club known for its bulk items, could possibly work in the city. You can't exactly lug a giant pack of toilet paper on the subway, right?

I finally decided to compare a Costco in Manhattan to one in the suburbs of Long Island to see if there were any major differences.

The Suburban Costco: A Warehouse Wonderland

The Westbury Costco, about 33 miles outside NYC, was a sprawling, seemingly endless warehouse. The parking lot was packed, even on a Tuesday afternoon. Inside, the sheer size of the store was impressive, with a wide variety of goods, from electronics to clothes, furniture, books, and even a sizable outdoor section with tents, firepits, and blow-up tubs.

The suburban location was a true one-stop shop, with a massive food and drinks section, including a bakery, rotisserie, deli, and a meat section that could feed a family of four for a month.

The NYC Costco: Smaller, But More Convenient

The East Harlem Costco, one of four in NYC, was smaller than the suburban location. It's located in a multi-level mall, so it's easy to access by public transportation. The layout was similar to the Westbury store, but with a more limited selection of certain items, like furniture and outdoor goods. This makes sense, as most NYC residents don't have the space for bulky items.

While the suburban Costco was ideal for stocking up on everything you might need, the NYC Costco felt more manageable for city dwellers. I didn't have to worry about transporting mountains of goods home, and the smaller size made it easier to navigate.

The Verdict

Costco in NYC is more of a curated experience, with a focus on items that are practical and convenient for city living. If you're looking for bulk items like furniture or a giant supply of snacks, you'll be better off going to a suburban location. But if you're looking for a quick trip to buy groceries, everyday items, and some deals on electronics or clothing, the NYC Costco is a great option.

Ultimately, whether you choose the city or the suburbs, Costco offers a unique shopping experience that can save you money and provide some entertainment along the way.
