A Tribeca Loft That’s a Masterclass in Modern Industrial Design

Australian-English interior designer Timothy Godbold's design of a four-bedroom loft in the Cast Iron House on Franklin Street blends industrial heritage with modern luxury. The 4,250-sqft loft, renovated by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, boasts a sophisticated yet understated aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the iconic cast iron facade.

Godbold uses a palette of neutral tones and rich textures to create a warm, inviting space, embracing the loft's expansive layout and highlighting its soaring ceilings. Natural light floods the interiors, while a curated mix of contemporary furnishings and vintage accents adds depth and character. Sleek finishes and artful detailing evoke a sense of refined elegance, making the loft both functional and timeless.

The design features reflective gold surfaces in the walk-in dressing area, a nod to the glamor of 1970’s cult cinema – a recurrent Godbold influence. Geometric forms are repeated throughout the loft, echoing Art Deco motifs while also creating a futuristic ambiance coupled with elements of Italian Modernism.

A Family-Friendly Design

The homeowners, a young family working in finance with two children, sought a functional space for both family life and entertaining. Godbold's design caters to both needs, showcasing the unique character of the ex-industrial space.

Godbold's creative process involved working closely with the homeowners, presenting everything in 3-D models to ensure a shared understanding of the design vision. This collaborative approach allowed for a fluid and evolving design process, resulting in surprises and unexpected results.

Architectural Harmony

Shigeru Ban's clean, chic renovation of the Cast Iron House provided a perfect canvas for Godbold's design. Godbold's work complements Ban's aesthetic, while creatively addressing architectural challenges like the structural columns. Godbold created a custom dining table that references an industrial-style table from the 1930s by Hans and Wassili Luckhardt and Alfons Anker, harmonizing with the building's industrial elements.

Design Inspirations and Sourcing

Godbold's design drew inspiration from a 1970’s sci-fi series that imagines a futuristic environment within a space informed by Italian industrialism and its leading designers, such as Joe Colombo. This concept is infused with the industrialism of the building, Art Deco elements, and geometric shapes.

Most of the elements in the space are custom-made, including stucco and marble walls in the double-height living room, furniture, and rugs. Godbold worked with skilled artisans and brands to bring his vision to life, resulting in a unique and cohesive design.

The loft is a testament to Godbold's design philosophy, which emphasizes functionality, elegance, and a deep respect for the architectural heritage of the space.
