NY Priest Demoted Following Sabrina Carpenter Music Video Controversy and $1.9M Scandal
A New York City priest, Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, has been relieved of his duties after an investigation revealed serious financial mismanagement and other violations. The investigation was launched after pop star Sabrina Carpenter filmed a music video at his church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel – Annunciation Parish in Brooklyn, sparking criticism last November.
The Scandal Unveiled
The probe, conducted by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, uncovered several key issues:
- Unauthorized Transfers: Gigantiello transferred $1.9 million in parish funds to bank accounts linked to Frank Carone, a former top aide in Mayor Eric Adams' administration. Carone's law firm repaid $1 million, but the remaining funds lacked proper interest repayment.
- Personal Expenses: An ongoing investigation is underway regarding Gigantiello's use of a church credit card for substantial personal expenses.
- Racist Remarks: A deacon, temporarily appointed during the investigation, was also relieved of his duties after secretly recorded conversations revealed racist and offensive language at Gigantiello's direction.
The investigation followed public outcry over the Sabrina Carpenter music video, which featured provocative scenes filmed within the church. While Gigantiello claimed his absence and a “lapse in judgment” regarding the filming, the broader investigation revealed the extent of the financial irregularities.
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations
Bishop Robert Brennan stated that he has taken steps to protect church funds and public trust by appointing Bishop Witold Mroziewski as the parish administrator. Gigantiello has been stripped of all administrative and fundraising duties and a spiritual rite was performed to restore the church's sanctity. Federal investigators are also involved, having subpoenaed the church for information regarding the financial dealings.
While neither Gigantiello nor Carone have been formally accused of wrongdoing, the scandal raises serious questions about the financial oversight within the diocese.
