The Haverstraw Police Department and the Hudson Valley Humane Society collaborated on the rescue, initially attempting to lure the alligator with meat, but eventually using a catch pole. A herpetology expert from the Bronx Zoo confirmed the alligator's health.

Gator's New Life

The alligator now resides with Mark Perpetua, owner of Mark Perpetua's Reptile Encounters and a high school science teacher. Perpetua plans to use the alligator for educational presentations about reptile conservation.

Perpetua emphasized that American alligators are not native to New York and are often abandoned by owners when they become too large to manage. He named the alligator Guidry, after his favorite baseball player.

Perpetua's reptile sanctuary now houses five alligators and a crocodile, with another crocodile arriving soon. He highlighted the challenges of finding suitable homes for unwanted alligators, particularly due to the limited capacity of zoos and sanctuaries.

The story emphasizes the unexpected places these animals can end up due to irresponsible pet ownership.
