NYC Fights Back Against E-bike Battery Fires with Expanded Charging Program

New York City is tackling the dangerous rise in e-bike battery fires by significantly expanding its sidewalk charging station program. This initiative aims to remove lithium-ion batteries from apartments, a major contributor to these devastating incidents.

From Pilot Program to Citywide Initiative

Initially launched as a six-month pilot with five stations, the program's success has led to its expansion. Three locations – Cooper Square, Essex Market, and Plaza de las Americas – will continue offering free battery-swapping services to pre-registered delivery workers via a dedicated app.

Beginning February 1st, property owners and tenants can apply to have these convenient charging cabinets installed in front of their buildings. This applies to retail spaces, community facilities, and residential buildings with five or more units.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to begin installations this year, with the FDNY overseeing approvals for each cabinet. The batteries used in these systems are inspected, owned, and digitally monitored by the providing companies, ensuring safety and accountability.

Addressing the Root of the Problem

The city recognizes that unsafe charging practices and low-quality batteries are fueling this crisis. At least five fatalities resulted from lithium-ion battery fires in NYC in 2024 alone.

The DOT emphasizes the importance of using UL-certified batteries and charging/storing them outside of homes to mitigate risks. This city-wide expansion of charging stations is a critical step towards improving e-bike safety and protecting lives.
