NYC Braces for Severe Storms and Hail, But Cooler Temps Are Coming!

Get ready for another round of summery weather this week before the cooler autumn temperatures we all crave arrive. The forecast calls for heat, humidity, and, of course, storms!

Monday's storms might not be widespread, but they're likely to hit during the evening commute, potentially causing traffic snarls. The greatest risk of severe weather lies east of NYC, including Long Island and Fairfield County, where a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect through 7 p.m. Monday night.

Severe thunderstorm watch

Be prepared for quarter-sized or larger hail, which could damage your car or even crack a windshield! If you can, park your car in a sheltered spot to avoid potential damage. Thankfully, flooding isn't a major concern, but isolated downpours could cause ponding on roads.

Possible hail size

While Monday's storms might be a bit of a bummer, there's good news on the horizon. By Wednesday, temperatures will be back in the 90s and humidity will spike, making it feel like triple digits. But this sweltering heat won't last long. A cold front moving through late Wednesday night will bring more strong storms, but it will also usher in cooler temperatures, dropping back into the 70s for Thursday.

The good news is, these cooler temperatures are here to stay, sticking around throughout Labor Day weekend and into early September. So get ready to finally enjoy a taste of fall that actually feels like fall!
