Tragedy struck on Wednesday when an American Airlines plane collided with an Army Blackhawk helicopter over the Potomac River, resulting in 67 fatalities. Among the victims was Melissa Jane Nicandri, a 28-year-old New Yorker. Mayor Eric Adams announced her identity in a social media post two days after the crash.

A Devastating Loss

Nicandri's family released a heartbreaking statement: "We are devastated by the sudden loss of Melissa. She was everything that anyone could hope for with a daughter - beautiful, smart, funny, kind, and generous. Her future was so bright. Melissa had an adventurous spirit and will be missed forever."

Nicandri was returning to New York from a work trip in Kansas, connecting through Reagan National Airport. The recovery effort continues, with over 40 bodies recovered from the river so far.
