Prehistoric Mastodon Jaw Unearthed in NY Backyard!
Orange County, New York, made headlines this week with an incredible discovery: a complete mastodon jaw, the first of its kind found in the state in over 11 years!

Calling in experts from the New York State Museum and SUNY Orange, a full excavation revealed not only the jaw, but also a toe bone and rib fragment.
"When I found the teeth and held them in my hands, I knew they were something special," said the excited homeowner.
The well-preserved jaw belonged to an adult mastodon, an ancient relative of elephants. Scientists will analyze it to learn about its age, diet, and life during the Ice Age.
"This jaw is an amazing discovery," said Dr. Robert Feranec of the New York State Museum. "Fossils like this help us learn about ancient ecosystems."
Orange County is known as a hotspot for mastodon fossils; approximately one-third of the 150 mastodon fossils discovered in New York originate from this area. Further excavation is planned to see if more remains can be found.
The jaw will be displayed at the New York State Museum in 2025 after scientific research is complete.
This incredible find offers a fascinating glimpse into New York's prehistoric past!
