Alaïa Takes the Guggenheim: A Celebration of American Beauty and Fashion

Alaïa, the iconic French fashion house, made history last night by staging its runway show inside the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This marked the first time the label presented a show in America since 1982, when founder Azzedine Alaïa debuted his designs at Bergdorf Goodman.

The show was a sentimental homecoming for the brand, with guests including supermodels Linda Evangelista, Amber Valletta, and Naomi Campbell, as well as Rihanna, who graced the event with her presence.

Alaïa Spring 2025 Collection

Creative Director Pieter Mulier showcased his incredible Winter-Spring 2025 collection, a continuation of his focus on form and movement. This time, however, Mulier infused clever references to American sportswear masters like Clare McCardell and Halston, utilizing denim and fluid jersey fabrics for a sense of freedom and movement.

Mulier’s designs featured dramatic pleating, second-skin bandeau bras, ruffled and asymmetrical skirts, and billowy pants worn low on the hip. Spectacular dresses and coats were sculpted to snake and coil around the models, showcasing the designer's mastery of form and movement.

As Mulier expressed, "For me, American beauty means freedom, of body and spirit. This collection is about honoring tradition alongside modernity. It’s a celebration of an American ideology of dress, and through that a spirit that can unite New York and Paris, of the body in motion, liberated."

Beyond the homage to American fashion, the show also served as a glimpse into the future. Mulier invited students from FIT, Parsons, and Pratt to witness the extraordinary techniques on display, inspiring the next generation of fashion visionaries.

This captivating event showcased Alaïa's commitment to both its heritage and its future, creating a truly unforgettable experience that celebrates the spirit of American beauty and fashion.
