NYC Honors 9/11 Victims on 23rd Anniversary: A Day of Remembrance and Reflection
New York City will hold a solemn ceremony on Wednesday, September 11th, to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the tragic terror attacks. The ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include the reading of victims' names, moments of silence, and tolling bells to mark the timeline of the attacks.
The first moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m., marking the moment the hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Similar pauses will follow for five other moments during the attacks, including when the towers fell.
The plaza will remain closed to the public during the ceremony, but a livestream of the event will be shown in its entirety here. NY1 will also air the ceremony live.
Following the remembrance ceremony, a moment of silence will be held at 2:30 p.m. to honor those who are sick or who have died as a result of 9/11-related illnesses or injuries.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are expected to visit the site on Wednesday.
At dusk, the Tribute in Light will begin, featuring two beams of blue light that can reach up to four miles into the sky, marking where the Twin Towers once stood. The lights will remain on through dawn on Thursday.
